The 12th Round Round Hainan Regatta 2023 grandly opened in Sanya, China

On the evening of November 23rd, 2023, a magnificent sailing event – the 12th Round Hainan Regatta 2023 (henceforth referred to as ‘the Round Hainan Regatta’) was inaugurated at the Serenity Marina located in Sanya. Upholding the halo and mission of ” China’s premier offshore regatta,” the Round Round Hainan Regatta embarked once more after a three-year hiatus, harnessing the easterly winds of the Hainan Free Trade Port Construction and carrying on writing new chapters in China’s large-scale offshore events.

This year’s Round Hainan Regatta has attracted 24 sailing teams, comprising approximately 300 participants. Competitors, race offical and technical team hailing from 15 diverse nations and territories such as the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Italy, Australia, Russia, South Africa, Canada, Pakistan, China, Hong Kong China, Macau China, among others, gathered in the picturesque Sanya is about to embark on their circumnavigation of the island.

At the opening ceremony, Zhang Huawei, Deputy Secretary-General of the People’s Government of Hainan Province, stated that as the premier offshore regatta in China, the Round Hainan Regatta will further generate the brand of high-level water sports international events in Hainan, showcase and spread the new image of Hainan Free Trade Port to the world with the concept of “polishing the business card of Free Trade Port,  realizing the integrated development of sports events and tourism, and promoting the construction of international tourism consumption center”. The birth of the Round Hainan Regatta coincides with the construction and development of Hainan international tourism Island. After more than 10 years of development, today’s Round Hainan Regatta is in line with international standards in competition organization, satellite tracking, rescue and other aspects, leading to a steady increase in both its quality and impact. The growing international character of the Round Hainan Regatta has emerged as a golden hallmark of Hainan’s sports tourism, concurrently reflecting an escalating sports consumption demand.

Ms. Zhang Xiaodong, Chairman of Chinese Yachting Association, pointed out that following years of development, the Round Hainan Regatta has evolved into the longest domestic route, featuring the highest level of competition, presenting the most daunting challenges, and encompassing the most intricate organizational and operational aspects among all sailing events. Moreover, he emphasized that the international impact of this event is continually amplifying. The Round Hainan Regatta has been successfully conducted for numerous consecutive years, efficaciously fostering the advancement of the maritime sports industry epitomized by sailing. This initiative effectively harnesses Hainan’s exceptional marine resources to cultivate maritime sports, disseminating marine knowledge amongst the general public while bolstering national maritime consciousness.  Furthermore, the population foundation for maritime sports has been augmented, hastening the development of a marine powerhouse and the Hainan Free Trade Port.

This year signifies the revival of the Round Hainan Regatta following a three-year hiatus. Once more, Sanya assumes the role of both the start and finish city for the event, thereby underscoring its reputation as a dynamic and energetic “Sailing City.” Sun Lei, Deputy Mayor of the People’s Government of Sanya City, stated that Sanya is a renowned tropical coastal tourist destination both domestically and internationally, characterized by its agreeable climate, stunning scenery, exceptional marine conditions, and comprehensive port facilities, rendering it an optimal location for the development of maritime sports. As a pivotal strategic city on the Maritime Silk Road, Sanya has vigorously advanced the development of aquatic sports, particularly sailing events. This initiative aims to broaden fresh avenues for tourism consumption, and endeavor to establish an international sailing metropolis and a global tourist destination.

The 12th Round Hainan Regatta 2023 is anchored on crafting “China’s premier offshore regatta,” narrating the stories of the Hainan Free Trade Port well, and facilitating the establishment of the Hainan Free Trade Port and the National Sports Tourism Demonstration District. Compared to the previous race, the current system boasts increased flexibility through the addition of a half-ring group, thereby affording more teams the chance to participate. Furthermore, over 60% of participating teams and players consist of professionals, contributing to a heightened level of both competitiveness and spectator enjoyment. Simultaneously, this event invited the participation of international referees and technical teams, maintaining a strict adherence to professional standards. The transformations and innovations of these events not only underscore the elevated standards of this year’s Round Hainan Regatta, but also demonstrate that China’s sailing endeavors are progressing towards loftier and more profound objectives.
